English Conversation, Culture and Education
• a unique home-stay opportunity for teachers of English
• immersive tuition focussing on your professional and personal needs
• 1:1 tuition or small group courses for 2-3 colleagues

Your tutor and host:

Hi...I’m Joan Dickie. I have a CELTA qualification to teach English as a foreign language and I specialise in home-stay courses for teachers of English who wish to improve both their professional classroom language as well as personal communication skills.
In my early career I was both a primary and secondary teacher, specialising in teaching foreign languages (Fr, Ge, It, Sp). I then became a teacher adviser and trainer, working with hundreds of schools and teachers in Norfolk, throughout the UK and Europe. I am passionate about active approaches to language teaching, using real books, song and drama. I am a national trainer for the Hocus and Lotus narrative format approach www.hocus-lotus.edu, if you wish to learn more about, or improve on, these skills. In my spare time I make silver jewellery and take contemporary dance classes. I love to read, go to the theatre and cinema and, occasionally, go scuba diving and sailing!

Your home:

You will stay with me and my husband, Peter, on our small fruit farm, Wood Farm, Wood Lane, Wicklewood, NR18 9PU, Norfolk, in the East of England, 2 miles from Wymondham /’wɪndəm/ and 12 miles from the beautiful cathedral city of Norwich /’nɒrɪtʃ/. We are an hour from Cambridge by train and two hours from London.
You will have your own bedroom(s), bathroom and study room (with TV and internet access). We have two gentle dogs (golden retrievers), two cats and three adult children who live in London but occasionally come home for the weekend! Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided, plus countless cups of tea! You can also borrow our bikes or walk around the farm or in our country lanes.

Your course:

Courses can last for one or two weeks and will be individually created to suit your requirements and level of English. Monday to Friday will consist of language tuition ‘modules’ and cultural ‘modules’. You can choose which modules you want and thus create your own individualised course. Saturday and Sunday will normally be departure and arrival days. See page 2 for example timetable, dates and prices

Language tuition:

5 x 3 hour modules at beginner/intermediate/advanced level. Educational professionals can choose from the following modules (or request a different emphasis) :

  • Classroom language: greeting pupils, praise and instructions
  • Hocus and Lotus stories: practising vocabulary for any group of stories
  • • Classroom games, songs, action rhymes: ideas, vocabulary, resources
  • • Storybooks: choosing good books, practising pronunciation, ideas for games and drama activities
  • CLIL: covering other curriculum areas through English (specify areas in advance)

You can mix educational modules with personal communication modules such as:
- Everyday conversation on a variety of themes: shopping, travel, books, news, culture, film or theatre visits etc.
- Looking at specific language areas e.g. pronunciation, grammar, informal language etc.
- A different module requested in advance by the student

Informal conversation & accompanied cultural visits/skills:

Module examples...other requested visits can be researched:
